Overview

Vortex Engineering was engaged by Lyttelton Engineering to design, manufacture and supply a multicyclone grit arrestor and induced draft (ID) fan system for a timber processing facility in Rangiora.

The system is designed to remove coarse particulate from boiler flue gas generated by two boilers operating on wood waste, coal, or a combination of both. By combining efficient particulate separation with reliable draft control, the system supports stable boiler operation while helping reduce particulate emissions before discharge.

Engineering Challenges

The system needed to provide reliable flue gas cleaning under demanding operating conditions, including:

  • Mixed-fuel boiler operation and varying boiler loads.
  • Flue gas temperatures of up to 220°C.
  • Continuous operation for up to 11.5 months per year.
  • Precise airflow management and reliable system performance.
  • A fully airtight and leak-proof system to maximise performance.

Our Solution

Vortex Engineering designed and supplied a complete multicyclone grit arrestor and induced draft fan system to meet the client’s operating requirements.

The system includes:

  • Taymac 20-4 multicyclone grit arrestor for primary particulate removal.
  • FB630 high-efficiency centrifugal ID fan for airflow and draft control.
  • Design airflow of approximately 4.75 m³/s.
  • Operating temperature up to 220°C.
  • Approximately 800 Pa pressure drop across the multicyclone.
  • High-temperature protective coating suitable for a C3 exterior environment.

Structural and seismic design was completed in accordance with relevant AS/NZS standards, with the ID fan dynamically balanced to ISO G2.5 requirements.

The completed system was delivered in September 2026, providing the facility with an integrated solution for particulate removal and flue gas draft control.
