Vortex Engineering was engaged to support an upgrade of the University of Canterbury’s boiler system, initially supplied by Vortex in an earlier project (Case Study) . The university required a high-performance fan solution to replace the existing Induced Draft (ID) fan to meet updated environmental and operational requirements.

Our Solution

Vortex designed and manufactured a custom ID fan tailored to the system’s demanding specifications. The fan was engineered to handle flue gases at 230°C, passing through an Electrostatic Precipitator (ESP) for emissions control. Built from heat- and corrosion-resistant materials, the fan was optimised for durability, energy efficiency, and compliance with modern environmental standards.

Although installation was not part of our scope, our engineering team worked closely with the client and the lead contractor to ensure seamless integration and long-term reliability.

The retrofit fan solution successfully upgraded the legacy boiler system, extending its operational life and improving overall system performance.
