Background

Vortex Engineering, in collaboration with group companies Taurus Engineering and Taylors Manufacturing, is engaged to deliver a wet scrubber system for a leading chemical distributor’s de-canting facility in Timaru to reduce nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions, with a focus on reliability, efficiency, and low maintenance.

Our Solution

Vortex Engineering proposed a 400mm diameter, 5m tall, packed bed wet scrubber constructed from FRP. The system includes:

  • Two spray nozzles for independently spraying demister pad and packing areas.
  • Recirculation pump with pH monitoring for continuous process control.
  • A 2.2kW stainless steel extraction fan with epoxy-coated internals for durability.
  • Control panel with pH sensor, motor controls, variable speed drive, and PLC with optional remote-control feature

This design provides robust NOx removal efficiency while allowing operational flexibility and ease of maintenance.

Our solution again showcases our ability to economically tailor our standard scrubber design to our clients’ individual requirements.

Expected Outcomes

  • Significant reduction in NOx emissions to meet environmental compliance standards.
  • Durable construction suitable for long-term operation under harsh industrial conditions.
  • Improved operational efficiency as well as improved personnel health & safety.

The project is well underway.
